Don't trust your manager!

Dear Reader,

Do you know that you are making an enormous mistake?

Are you trusting your manager solely for your career planning?

Trust me, if you are doing this, you are holding back yourself.

Your manager might be the best person in the world, but he is not the best person to guide your professional growth.

Why is that?

Most managers in tech climb up to their positions after years as successful developers.

They have an incredible problem-solving mindset.

However, they usually don't get formal training in career coaching.

So, their guidance is limited to what worked for them.

While that is invaluable information, it may not work for you.

You are a different person with completely unique aspirations.

So, can you realistically expect them to navigate your career paths?

The answer is no.

Again, it's not about their intentions, which may be good, but about their capabilities and focus areas.

Managing a team and coaching for career growth require different skill sets, which not all managers possess.

So, don’t solely rely on your manager for your career planning.

Instead, take charge of your career in your hand.

  • Connect and ask other software developers who have achieved significant milestones you want to achieve. They can offer experienced perspectives on your career options.
  • Connect with mentors who can offer unbiased advice on your career paths.
  • Consult professional career coaches who are specialized in crafting career paths, improving job search strategies, and navigating transitions effectively.
  • Invest in your education. Attend workshops, take courses, do certifications, and connect with developers in those workshops and courses.

Your career is the most precious asset you have.

Don't leave it in the hands of someone who, no matter how skilled in other areas, might not be equipped to guide you to your highest potential.

Take control of your career. Your future depends on it.

Hello Reader, Last week, I came off an intense stretch of focused work. I call it extreme momentum. It’s the kind of mode where I move fast, ship hard, and almost forget to breathe. But when it ends? I crash. Not energy-wise — system-wise. Because during those bursts, I stop updating my tools. No OmniFocus. No Notion. Just building. And when I finally slow down, I’m staring at a mess: Outdated tasks Random notes & ideas Disconnected logs of what I did A system that no longer reflects my...
